Located at the quaint corner of Benton Terrace in Jesmond, Newtons Coffee House is not just another café; it’s a vibrant hub for coffee lovers, foodies, and anyone seeking a warm and inviting atmosphere to unwind. This charming spot stands out in Newcastle upon Tyne’s coffee scene for its dedication to quality, creativity, and customer service.

Step inside, and you're greeted by the tantalizing aroma of freshly brewed coffee, expertly crafted by barista Josh, who has earned rave reviews for his skill, particularly with unique offerings like the dirty chai. The café emphasizes an environmentally friendly approach, using only the best local ingredients. This commitment ensures that every sip of your drink and every bite of your food is carefully curated for maximum taste.

As you explore the menu, you’ll find an array of delectable options. Indulge in one of their mouth-watering focaccias, stuffed with fresh ingredients, or a luscious sandwich made to order. Sweet treats such as signature cakes are also a must-try—many patrons note how truly fantastic they are, thanks to the talented duo of Josh and Danielle. The lemon tart, in particular, has garnered quite the following, with customers commenting how it’s “unreal.”

The atmosphere at Newtons is both relaxed and welcoming, making it the perfect spot to enjoy a leisurely afternoon or grab a quick bite on the go. Though the café is compact, with limited seating and no toilet facilities, this only adds to its charm. You can easily pop in, grab a cup of their outstanding coffee, and bask in the beautiful Newcastle weather while savoring your food outdoors. Many reviews highlight this convenience, making it an ideal choice for those on the move or looking to enjoy their meal alfresco.

Customer experiences speak volumes about the value and quality this café offers. Ryan Renaissance passionately proclaims it could very well be the best coffee shop in Newcastle, while Isabelle Gayler reflects on the consistently stellar service and the high quality of fresh ingredients. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick caffeine fix or a leisurely lunch, Newtons Coffee House promises a delightful culinary experience that resonates with locals and visitors alike.

For those seeking a pet-friendly environment, you’ll also be pleased to know that furry companions are welcome, adding a delightful touch for dog owners. Best coffee shop in Newcastle? I think it could be, and I do not say that lightly. Several months ago, I was on somewhat of a mission to find the best independent coffee shop in the area, and the fact that I’ve just said “mission” in relation to coffee tells you everything you need to know about how serious I take it. I make no apologies for that, I mean coffee is king, it deserves to be appreciated, right? At last a place that lives up to the reviews! This is epitome of a hidden gem. Actually, thanks to a nice new sign, it might not be so hidden anymore. The owner is an absolutely top bloke, really welcoming, friendly and passionate about his business, and rightfully so. The drink / food selection and service are all top-tier. The cinnamon / vanilla latte, and hot chocolate are divine. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever had better. The food is clearly made with the finest and freshest ingredients, I would appreciate an extra vegetarian option though. The Funfetti cake’s the nicest cake I’ve ever had, bar none. Some places have such a disconnect between the quality of service / produce. No matter how good the coffee is, if the service is poor, it’s going to leave a bad taste in your mouth. There’s no risk of that from Newton’s, this place effortlessly delivers in all areas. I really like the interior, it’s smart, classy, and minimalism done right. So many places fail at taking the ‘less is more’ approach without making it draining and soulless, a certain American chain springs to mind. My only nitpick is the seating, I find stools so uncomfortable, and as I struggle with a bad back it means I can never stay as long as I’d like. I completely understand the decision though, stools make best use of the rather small space, and the only way to maximise the amount of customers it can facilitate. As I say, it is just a nitpick, especially when considering that this place seems to be very much geared towards take-out. Completely agree with the review that said even when you’re lucky enough to be the only person inside, there is still such a warm atmosphere which is impressive. Like another reviewer, I too can struggle with interactions due to social anxiety but the owner somehow does the impossible and makes it not daunting at all, a joy in fact. Any day that begins with a Newton’s coffee and a little chat with the owner I know is going to be a great day. Cannot recommend enough. This isn’t news but it’s such an injustice, the domination of mediocre chains, when places like this are a 100 x better. It makes me so happy to see an independent smashing it, in spite of all the obstacles, against all the odds. Newton’s has already amassed a strong and devoted following, and I just know it will continue to go from strength to strength. This guy is doing everything right, and deserves all the success in the world.

Really professional and clean cafe. Josh made a fantastic dirty chai and iced coffee will definitely come again and the lemon tart is unreal !

Coffee - great. Fresh food - great. Cakes - great. Chilled food - great. Service - outstanding. Really can't ask for more from a local coffee shop. You'll have to go a long way to find a better coffee shop. The entrance is slightly obscured but make sure to visit if you're in the area. Can't recommend it enough.

Really lovely coffee, and the sandwiches were really tasty, and the staff were easily able to cater for lactose intolerance. The only downside I can see is that they don't have a toilet, but it's a small eatery mostly for to go coffee anyway so it's not really a downside for me.

Nice breakfast here. The place is intended for to go, because it is very small, no toilet, but there are a few seats inside. Outside in the sun too. Nice coffee and sandwiches. The wrap is tasty, but very greasy.

Always have such a lovely experience at Newtons! The quality of the ingredients and coffee is superb and the coffee house is spotless. Josh is lovely and welcoming and him and Danielle make the best cakes! All the food is super tasty and the atmosphere is nice and relaxed. I always look forward to returning. My new favourite coffee house and food spot in Newcastle! Not to mention the lush Italian sodas :)

Lovely little coffee shop selling freshly made focaccias and a selection of sweet treats. Even better it’s dog friendly!
